Diamond Pattern Red
snake identification - dark brownish red with yellow diamond or banding - A type of king snake?
I came across a snake the other day while hiking in the San Joaquin Hills (Orange County, CA). It was about 2 feet long and built like a king snake. It was brownish red (brick red) with a yellow diamond pattern that morphed into yellow banding about half way down its length. I haven't seen those vivid of colors on a king snake before. Could it have been something else? Maybe an exotic?
It might be an unusual color pattern of one of our kingsnakes or even Thamnophis elegans terrestris - Coast Gartersnake
