Earth Floor Tile

would this idea work for ball pythons?
i have been thinking about getting some ball pythons in a couple years when i finish my house and i was thinking on making a Plexiglass floor to ceiling habitat with air holes at the corners, like beside the wood corner posts for ventilation from ceiling to floor & a mister system along the ceiling of the habitat, tile or smooth concrete floor with a drain in the center but i would worry about stomach abrasions so my thought was just to have a soft earth floor . possibly put a small pool in the corner like foot deep? with smooth river rocks in it.
i was thinking 4 ft long? but would 6ft long be better? how many ball pythons could live in that O_O because i want at least 4....in the future.
because it would be 6-7 ft tall and i want to put rocks and things for them to climb and lounge on.
good ideas? better ideas than mine? creative criticism?
Hiya, your idea sounds............mental - but a really really good mental at that lol
I love the idea and it sounds like a brilliant concept, a few key things to note first though. A.) Are you SURE you want to do this with royals? yes, they are gorgeous, yes they are my favourite snake and yes they make fantastic pets but they aren't exactly communal - in a way...which leads me to B.) have you done all the research into royal pythons and snakes as pets in general as you possibly can??....lets say you haven't, snakes being kept together is never a good idea, depending on a lot of things of course, 1. food....royals tend to just randomly go off their food, you can't monitor the animal in a giant enclosure with other snakes in the immediate area, they LOVE tiny places small, dark enclosure really work best with this species, 2. the possibility of males fighting, or even females having a little bitch are very real, as are snakes breeding way before their time which will kill the female and possibly render the male in-fertile, 3. health risks, I won't go into it, but things like mites, an R.I or any number of things could happen if you make any mistakes that could be simply avoided with just one snake in a small enclosure. C.) snakes aren't big on company and usually only cross in the wild to breed, so living together in a relatively confined space is a no-go, so the obvious answer is to make it bigger to give them all space, right?! ....wrong! Go back to 1, 2 and 3...!!!
That's not even everything covered, I had loads more to say but it's completely left my mind >< (it would, wouldn't it!)
Ok, how about, same idea, different species of snake, I assume you like royals because of there stocky shape, beauty and basically just how quiet and gentle they are....well they are fantastic animals, I have 3...and you can always do this project with a diff species and still own a bunch of royals...if you have limited space, storage tubs make fantastic enclosures, google it as I won't go into it now....ok, so back to a diff species, rough green snakes, not too hard to get a hold of in Ireland(where I am) so if your in the UK, US or any part of Europe it should be a doddle to get a bunch. They eat crickets which is a big difference, it also makes feeding that bit cheaper than a bunch of royals, they are commonly kept in pairs or in groups of 3 and 4, they are pretty, not too big and there's no point in handling them as they're quite bitchy, but will calm down over time, they are also beautiful animals and look fantastic in a Display set-up like the one mentioned above. (Wait, another thing about royals I never mentioned...go back to A.) did you do your research?! well pythons like small dark enclosures, unless this perspex enclosure is in a quiet, dark room with pretty much no traffic (which would be a waste of time and effort!!! then don't bother with royals as they will freak out if they feel exposed) ) ...ok moving on again, like I said rough green snakes would be much better than ball pythons.
6foot would be much better than 4 if your gonna go with a big group of rough greens.
If you do get the greens you could then have some frogs (please go onto like RFUK and ask the frog guru's and snake guru's there about this) but some species of frog would be completely ignored by rough greens (as in they won't eat them or vice versa!!!) which would make your enclosure even better, if you were to do that then you would have to use a soil-type earth floor (it looks nicer than concrete anyways) the pond and mister on at regular intervals would mean that your enclosure would be suitable for frogs and if you go with a 6footer, with all the snakes, crickets(as food, some may be left uneaten, or get lodged somewhere and die) and frogs plus the soil substrate(or bedding) then you could get springtails, little insect things you can get online (again go to reptileforumsuk or RFUK to find them) the springtails eat any mould and dead things on the floor and will last quite a while and won't be eaten by the snakes/frogs and are totally harmless so would be a good addition so your not cleaning all the time (remember the mister will create high humidity and in warm, humid conditions mould will grow somewhere!!) Ok, that's taken quite a while, I hope you make the right choice and don't go putting a bunch of royals in there as they will end up freaking out, not eating for you and then you have to look after and re-house 4-5 sick, un-eating, scared ball pythons (not fun!!)
I think that is everything...email me or something if not or whatever and I'll do my best to help. ![]()
I really hope this helps somewhat dude/dudette:P
