Coaster mosaic on a wooden tray, how to glue/grout?
This is what I want to do: I have a couple of unfinished wooden trays that are a bit flimsy, but I wanted to used either coasters or glass on the bottom to make it sturdier (and prettier).
First, if the tray is flimsy to begin with, is it even worth buying the coasters and going to the trouble of laying the coasters like tile if the handles may just break later on (I want to actually use them, which is why I want to make them sturdier)?
What is the best way to glue down some square coasters to wood? How long should it set, and then, do I have to use grout, and how long should the grout set?
Do I need a brush? I've never worked with grout before, so any advice you have to offer would be great.
I've been making mosaics for 10 years. I would NOT work with anything flimsy. It will become even heavier in the end and will probably break. Especially if you grout it. But then again, why not try it. You might get lucky if you don't move them much.
As far as what glue to use, you can use mastic (found next to tile in a hardware store) or regular white craft glue. I prefer mastic. It stays in place and never slides around like craft glue can.
If you place the coasters/glass back to back you don't need to grout it. But if you do grout, make sure the glue is dry before grouting. Grout should be about the consistency of oatmeal. It usually dries in a couple of days, according to how large your grout lines are. Tip: The smaller the grout lines, the less likely they will crack.
I would also consider sealing it with a grout sealer. Good Luck!
